Direct response

Tourism is a visitor status, not residency

The so-called “tourist visa” grants visitor status without permission to engage in paid activities. It allows applicants to request a stay of up to 180 days; the actual duration of the stay and admission are determined by the National Institute of Migration upon entry.

Three Possible Routes

Do you need a visa to travel to Mexico?

The answer depends on your passport, the valid immigration documents you already have, and the actual purpose of your trip.

01

Exempt Nationality

Citizens of certain countries may apply for entry directly with a valid passport and documents proving the purpose of their trip.

02

Amount per document

A valid multiple-entry visa or permanent residency from certain countries may exempt you from the Mexican visa requirement, provided you comply with the applicable rules.

03

Consular or electronic visa

If you are not eligible for an exemption, you must apply for the appropriate visa. The electronic application process is only available for certain passports and travel circumstances.

Scope of the condition

What you can do as a visitor and what's required if you take a different route

The term “tourism” is used in everyday language, but the immigration status covers specific unpaid activities and short stays.

Consular File

General Requirements When You Do Need a Visa

The consulate may request additional documents depending on your nationality, place of residence, and the purpose of your application.

  • A valid and current passport or travel document.
  • Visa application and photograph meeting the consular office's specifications.
  • Proof of legal residence if you are applying from outside your country of citizenship.
  • Evidence of the applicable ground: financial stability, ties to the community, invitation, or another admissible basis.
  • Consular appointment and interview.
  • Payment of the fee for receiving and reviewing the application.
Decision-making process

From Diagnosis to Immigration Screening

  1. 1

    Confirm your route

Determine whether an exemption, simplified documentation requirement, electronic visa, or consular visa applies.

  2. 2

    Identify the real reason

Tourism, family visits, business trips, short-term study, transit, or medical treatment all require a consistent story.

  3. 3

    Submit the file

Organize your financial, residency, and travel documents so that there are no discrepancies between the forms and your interview.

  4. 4

    Attend and conduct interviews

Please appear in person; the decision is up to the consular office.

  5. 5

    Prepare for Admission

Make sure your itinerary, accommodations, funds, and point of departure are consistent with what you have declared.

Avoidable Mistakes

Why an Application Loses Its Edge Before the Interview

  • Choose a date that is different from the actual purpose.
  • Submitting inconsistent financial documents.
  • Do not provide proof of ties to your home country.
  • Arriving without a visa when one is required by your passport.
  • Declare tourism for employment purposes.
  • Traveling without a confirmed itinerary and accommodations.
  • Assume that 180 days are always granted.
  • Confusing a visa approval with guaranteed admission.

“The problem rarely starts at the airport. It starts when the route was chosen without proper assessment.”
